LORI
MADDOX -
BEBE BUELL
On the
previous
"GROUPIES"
page, I introduced the reader
to half a dozen of the best known
"Ladies of Rock" from around the United
States.
In addition to Laurel Canyon's GTO's, you met
Arkansas' "Sweet Sweet Connie",
Chicago's Cynthia "Plaster Caster". LA
favorite, Morgana, etc.
As the lengthy page grew, I decided to save the "Saga
of Jimmy Page's L.A. Women"
(condensed)
for
its own separate
page. The story of -Jimmy Page - Miss Pamela -
Lori Maddox - Bebe Buell - deserved a page of its own.
I have also included a
personal "LA Story" about Lori
Maddox

"Lori
Lightning"
["Lori Mattix"] {Lori Maddox & Jimmy Page} |
Lori
Maddox
was born Los Angeles, Calif. in 1958.
As a student at Beverly
Hills High School, Lori became part of the wild Hollywood teenage
groupie scene in the early 1970s.
In fact, she reportedly
lost her virginity at age 13 to
David Bowie
and his then wife,
Angela
(Angie).
|
Lori Maddox befriended the unofficial
"Queen of the LA Groupie Scene",
SABLE STARR,
and the inexperienced teen had found her mentor.
Though years
younger than "Miss Starr", Lori and Sable became best friends
and Lori
became a regular at
all the famous Hollywood groupie hangouts:
the
Rainbow Bar & Grill, Rodney's English Disco,
the
Continental Hyatt House (also known as
"The Riot House"),
and, of course, the Whisky.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:
My records
show that "The Heaviest Drummer Ever Born" was born
- DOB: May 31, 1943.
My math shows - 1972 minus 1943 = 29 - So, on May 31, 1972, Bonham turned
29 yrs. old Bad info? Or, were the guys feeding the girls a backstage pass'
worth of BS?
|
Like her close friend,
Sable Starr, Lori was often
featured in 'Star Magazine',
a short-lived
Hollywood 70's magazine (not to be confused with the
Star tabloid magazine),
which featured articles detailing the activities
and exploits of various Sunset Strip music
groupies. In addition to her early exposure in "STAR" magazine,
Lori found some legitimate work as a teen model. Even at such a
young age, it was obvious that Lori was destined to achieve some
form of notoriety in her life,
and it would happen when Lori was still 14 years old.
That was her age when she met the man
of her dreams,
Led
Zeppelin guitarist,
Jimmy Page.
Jimmy first
set eyes on young Miss Maddox when an associate of his showed the
famed guitarist a picture of Lori.
Jimmy was intrigued by the photo, and when his band,
Led Zeppelin,
arrived in Los Angeles
on
their 1972 tour, Jimmy immediately tried to get
together with young Lori. Though Jimmy was dating groupie,
Pamela Des
Barres, at that time (known as"Miss Pamela" of
the GTO's), Page reportedly pursued
Lori nonstop.
According to Lori
- after Page tried and failed several times to get
together with her, Jimmy had Led Zeppelin's tour manager, Richard
Cole, "kidnap" her, and bring her back to the
Sunset Strip's Continental Hyatt House, the hotel where
Led Zeppelin was encamped for their LA stay. Lori was brought up to
Page's hotel room, to meet the legendary English axeman. The
scene of their first meeting is described in the Led Zeppelin book,
"Hammer
Of The Gods"
"It was dimly lit by candles... and Jimmy was
just sitting there in a corner, wearing this hat slouched
over his eyes and holding a cane. It was really mysterious
and weird... He looked just like a gangster.
It was
magnificent."
Beginning that night, Jimmy and Lori began what became their
longtime torrid affair.
To compound the already difficult
situation, the pair also had to
keep their relationship a secret from the public because Jimmy was at risk of being arrested,
due to Lori being underage. At the same time,
Jimmy was still seeing Pamela (along with other women), and his
relationship with Pamela was destined to reach a dramatic end. And a
dramatic finish did take place when Jimmy escorted Miss Pamela
to a special Led Zeppelin party, but later, Page left that
glamorous party with Lori,
instead of his date, Miss Pamela. Page's inglorious method of dumping Pamela
at the high-class soiree was obviously an egregious act by the
insensitive British musician, but then again,
'sensitivity' &
'rock 'n' roller'
are two words rarely used together, or even in the same
sentence.
{right - Jimmy Page & Miss Pamela}
Obviously,
Miss Pamela was devastated by the appalling incident on multiple
levels.
Breaking up is seldom easy, no matter what the details, but the
rudeness shown in this situation was so much more than just an
indelicate break up.
Sure, one can argue that Rock Star and groupie relationships
don't fall under the same social covenants as weddings, proms,
engagements, etc. However, this break up didn't occur backstage,
or, in some thrashed hotel room at the Continental
"Riot House",
or the Chateau Marmont. Not only did it erupt at a classy,
Elite R&R Hollywood Shindig, it was
LED ZEPPELIN's
swank party, filled with
Rock's upper class, the top musicians, label big-wigs, big-time
media, the classiest dates, and, of course, only the most elite
groupies, PLUS, it was witnessed by everyone that mattered
in Pamela's young life. It was so much worse than being jilted
at the prom by the school's star quarterback; it was almost as
bad as the groom failing to show at the wedding.
To fully understand the heartbreak, worse, the mortification,
experienced by Miss Pamela, it's necessary to fully comprehend
some of the specifics involved.
First &
foremost, despite the actions
displayed by groupies like
"Sweet Sweet Connie",
and
others of that ilk, Miss Pamela was serious about
who she would bed. Like the
others, she too was sexually liberated, but she retained a
higher level of sophistication, opting to pursue select
musicians to whom she was attracted, eschewing
Sweet Connie's
goal of accumulating more notches on her bedpost than her
competitors, regardless of who, or where, the conquests.
Pamela would experience "crushes" on specific musicians, and
direct her energies toward seduction of these young bucks.
{right-young Miss Pamela}
Secondly,
though actors, musicians, and high profile celebrities had been
stalked, pursued, and idolized, by their fans since the 1920's,
the zealous methods and unbridled intensity, employed by 60's
rock music groupies was in its nascent stages along with
Rock&Roll music itself. After the hysteria of female Elvis
Presley fans re-emerged as Beatlemania, all rules governing
music fan behavior became obsolete, and concert security became
an important issue in the production of live music performances.
At the same time, an English rock group was emerging from the
London music scene, who would soon set the standard for such
security. Second only to the Beatles, and perhaps Mick Jagger's
Rolling Stones, LED ZEPPELIN would soon generate an excitement
in their hotel rooms which rivaled that of their concert
performances. The group of four young Brits would become the
groupies' most coveted prey, throughout the band's illustrious
career. And what better catch for a groupie than Led Zep's
guitarist, Jimmy Page?
Obviously,
I'm not privy to Miss Pamela's intimate personal feelings for
Jimmy Page at the time (I
confess... I haven't read her book) ,
but regardless of her personal feelings,
the ramifications of that evening deflated her uncontested
groupie reign as "Queen",
To be 'dumped'
at 'the
Grande Ball' by
'Prince Charming', for a
'little waif',
definitely set back Pamela's groupie standing.
Pamela's
reputable status within the clan was preserved, thanks to her
mature handling of the humiliating scene.
It goes without saying that
Pamela was
'a taste' bitter about
the style of being dumped by Jimmy, and it's reported within
"inner-groupie circles" that Pamela considered Lori an
"enemy" of hers for
several years.
BACK TO LORI & JIMMY -
Despite Lori's age, it's agreed that she and Jimmy were very much in love, and the
pair maintained their
"May-December" relationship for the next year and a half.
That's not to say that Jimmy abstained from the pleasures of the
Rock Star life to which he had become accustomed. The fact that Lori
often traveled with Led Zeppelin on tour didn't stop
Jimmy from having numerous affairs with other women.
Not to name names,
but...
Chrissie Wood, wife of Ron Wood (Faces, the Rolling Stones), was
a regular visitor, sometimes remaining in residence for long
periods of time .And then there was that young, female
magazine photographer
who somehow also found her way into
Jimmy's bed.
Another
was
Bebe
Buell, a beautiful model and
relatively, an 'older woman'
(nineteen),
then living with Todd Rundgren, and about to make her media debut
as a
'Playmate'
(Miss November-1974) in Playboy's special issue "Girls of Rock&Roll".
Jimmy eventually began dating Bebe Buell,
and subsequently, dumped Lori
Maddox,
by then, she was 16.
In a strange
twist of fate, shortly thereafter, Bebe Buell was Jimmy's designated escort
for ZEP'S new SWAN SONG record label's extravagant, big-time
inauguration blowout bash.
This one promised to be much more outrageous than the last -
when Page dumped Pamela for Lori.
I can only guess that Lori felt there was a good chance of
history repeating itself (i.e.: Jimmy dumping Bebe, and leaving
the party with Lori), and that's why she attended the gala
affair. Unfortunately, that was not to be the case....
Due
to her previous position in the Led Zeppelin camp, Maddox easily
secured an invite, and prepared herself for a successful party
repeat with Jimmy Page.
She was attired in a beautiful snow-white designer dress, and
she made sure that her hair & makeup was perfect. However,
Lori's state of mind was not as well prepared. The more she
pondered her eventual confrontation with Mr. Page, the more she
drank. During this same time, she continued to ingest drugs, to
further bolster her confidence. This ingestion included both
Cocaine and Quaaludes. It's uncertain how much she consumed of
each substance, but, what is certain, is
the ugly scene which transpired after her drug consumption.
Wandering about the elegant crowd in a muddled daze, Lori was
indeed, a pitiful sight. Somehow, she had managed to bloody her
nose, staining her snow-white dress a vivid red. As the rejected
groupie stalked Page and Buell, the uncomfortable couple decided
a quiet exit was the solution to the uncomfortable situation.
As Jimmy and Bebe were leaving, Lori jumped
out from behind a statue, crying to Jimmy,
"Why are you doing
this to me?"
Jimmy tried to ignore her, and
with his date, Bebe, jumped into their waiting limo
and escaped into the darkness of night.
Just
as Miss Pamela was 'dethroned' two years prior, Lori suffered a
worse fate, never to return as a viable player within the
'elite groupie ranks'.

BEBE BUELL |
|

BEBE BUELL
was a groupie on a whole different level.
As discussed above,
Bebe was a successful fashion model,
and a popular Playboy Playmate.
{right-Jan'89}
Bebe enjoyed a six-year
relationship with rock musician, Todd Rundgren,
during the seventies. Nonetheless, the relationship did not restrict the
sophisticated glamour girl from "making the rounds", thus
qualifying her for a high ranking in 'groupie stardom'.
While living with Rundgren, Buell also had affairs with members of the
Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Jimmy Page, and Aerosmith
frontman, Steven Tyler.
The tryst with Tyler led to the birth of actress Liv
Tyler. After she
split from Rundgren, she hooked up for periods with both Rod Stewart and Elvis Costello.
Bebe was released by Ford modeling agency after her nude pictorial in Playboy
magazine, but, she easily secured many additional contracts in Europe.
Over the years, Bebe also bedded her share of 'Punks': Billy Idol,
Stiv Bators, and Coyote Shivers, with whom she shared six years of
marriage.
Bebe's
liaisons weren't limited
to musicians, rating Warren Beatty & Jack Nicholson as two of her
favorite, tender, lovers.
During the eighties, Bebe set her sights on a different role in music, this time as a
singer, fronting her bands: "The B-Sides" as well as, "The
Gargoyles". {below}

After the paternity of her daughter was revealed, Bebe was forced to put her
singing career on hold, in order to devote all her attention to raising her
lovely daughter, Liv.

The 'mother-daughter' beauties continue to enjoy their relationship as
girlfriends, as well as being family. Once young Liv's film career took off,
Bebe was able to return to her pursuit of a singing career. The determined Buell continues to record and
occasionally perform live, releasing her own CD, titled, 'Free To Rock'.
Calling New York City "Home" since 1989, Bebe married another
musician, Jim Wallerstein, of Das Damen and Vacationland,
in 2002.
Though Bebe might have slowed a wee bit in her intense drive to achieve music
success, her solo career has included several "The Bebe Buell Band"
lineups,
playing clubs around the New York and Boston area.
{left-Los Angeles}
Following in the successful literary path paved by her sister
"High Class Groupie" (and former Jimmy
Page escort), Miss Pamela Des Barres,
Bebe wrote her own 'tell-all' autobiography:
"Rebel Heart: An American Rock 'n' Roll Journey"
(
published -1991),
and Buell has plans to write more in the future.
I told you she was a groupie
'on a different level'. |

AUTHOR'S
NOTE: My Lori Maddox Rock&Roll
Groupie Story
I can't write about Lori Maddox and Jimmy
Page without recounting a personal story in which Lori played a role.
Like many of my
"LA Stories", it clearly reveals my 'less than impressive'
position in the music business, while showing the 'irony' of living in Los
Angeles. I'll do my best to keep it short. |
|
Back
in 1985, Jimmy Page had joined with ex Bad Company singer, Paul
Rodgers. to form
the
FIRM..
Having never missed Led Zeppelin when in L.A., the upcoming FIRM
concert was a MUST SEE for me. I secured good seats for the show, and together
with my girlfriend at the time, Lori Eget, eagerly attended the much anticipated
Jimmy Page performance. Led Zeppelin has always been my favorite rock band, and,
next to
Jeff Beck, Page was 'THE Greatest Guitarist' in my humble
opinion. Being a hard core music fan, I can remember leaving only 2 concerts in
my life, before the final encore. The Firm concert became concert #3. The
uninspired performance, with inferior songs, reminded me of a similar 'less than
exciting', 'Super Star', group's performance - BLIND FAITH; only this
time the poor sound quality was MUCH TOO LOUD!
{left-Jimmy Page}
Back in the
car, while bemoaning the pitiful state of my obvious "over-the-hill"
musical existence., I suggested we find a nice quiet club for a drink. Lori
suggested the piano bar at the BEL-AGE HOTEL. Having never been in the
swank Sunset Strip hotel , I readily agreed. Upon entering the mellow, dimly lit
bar, we were met with shrieks of "LORI" from a middle-aged woman,
seated next to an overweight man at the bar. After hugs & kisses, Lori explained
that the woman was the mother of one of her closest friends in High School,
LORI MADDOX. We sat next to the couple and ordered drinks.
While the females
babbled about old times, I spotted a familiar face at the far end of the bar,
my number #1 favorite guitarist,
Jeff Beck. However, as much as I love and respect the man's musical expertise, his
creativity, and his amazing, totally 'one-of-a-kind' skills playing his
instrument, on a personal level, I found the eccentric guitarist to be
somewhat
of an asshole. Having co-produced the six dates of
Jeff Beck's Western Canadian "WIRED" Tour,
I had followed Ernest's (Chapman?-Beck's attorney/manager) advice,
and stayed clear of his temperamental
"Artist/Guitar God", Thus, unlike
80-90% of the shows I've promoted, I didn't meet the artist. But that changed on
the tour's third night. Unlike Jeff Beck, I had befriended the amazing guitarist
(and great guy), we had booked to open for Beck, legendary blues guitarist,
Harvey
Mandel. After his set, Harvey & I were "cruising the crowd", in search
of Canadian female talent to invite to the concert 'after-party'.. After the
show's encore, we met the most beautiful, naive, sweet & very young, Jeff Beck
fan, who expressed a strong desire to meet the emotionally unstable Rock Star.
Unlike most groupies, this little beauty was so sweet & sincere that, against my
better judgment, I escorted her backstage and knocked on Mr. Beck's dressing
room door. When Beck's 'goon' inquired "Who's there? and what do you want?", I
introduced myself, and announced that I had a "sweet young lady" who wanted to
meet Jeff. Beck came to the door, opened it about 10 inches, looked me in the
eye, scowled, looked at the groupie, and reached out, grabbed her arm, pulled
the sweet innocent honey into the room , and slammed the door in my face.
"SO MUCH FOR OUR MUTUAL BONDING...." |
In the meantime, the bartender brought me another beer, courtesy of the stranger
seated to my left, "Mr. Stills", the bartender announced. In shock,
Stephen Stills and
Steven Eastwood
began to converse. (more for the
complimentary beer than his celebrity). I had been aware that Lori Maddox and
Jimmy Page had been 'an item' in the past, but was totally unaware of the
friendship between the 2 "Lori's".
As I interrogated Stills, he informed me that the Firm was staying at the Bel
Age Hotel, and that he, together with Mrs. Maddox (?), and
Jeff Beck, were all at the bar
waiting for the arrival of Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers, and cohorts, to show up after the concert
for drinks, conversation, and 'what have you.'...
I was shocked! In seeking to escape
the
madness of Rock&Roll, I had stumbled upon what was about to be a refined
re-creation of the Continental "Riot House" madness, after an LA Led
Zeppelin concert. For a moment I considered,
"If the band selected this posh
establishment for their LA stay, maybe they too had matured over the years, and
were also attempting to avoid the spotlight, groupies, and hysteria, that
follows their shows."
That thought was interrupted when half a dozen, wildly
dressed, giddy females arrived, all talking at the same time, at a volume
reminiscent of the rock concert that had driven us to this mellow hideaway.
I was even more shocked when I heard myself utter,
"Let's get out of here".
Indeed, I really was "Over-the-Hill". |
